Over winter break, I got a good chunk of work done on the Maulerfiend for my very small Chaos army. It currently stands at a whooping 9 models…Lord, Chosen and 3 Tactical Marines.
I wanted to try something new for the Maulerfiend, breaking up what I was worried was going to be too much black armor. I had seen a chipping effect using hairspray on YouTube that I really wanted to try.
1.Paint the rust effect all over the areas to be chipped. I used a combination of rusting powders and paint. Be aware the the powders do make a bit of a mess, so cover areas with newspaper or do it on an outside workbench. I may just airbrush on browns and oranges next time and forego the powders. Let it all dry for 24 hours.
2.Take a can of hairspray and give it a good coat. I let it dry overnight.
3. Airbrush on a black base coat. I used Vallejo Air standard black. Let it dry for a bit. I waited 2 hours.
4. Take a large brush, about the size of GW’s tank brush. Generously dip it in water and begin to agitate the areas where you want the rust to appear. I used a stabbing motion with a bit of a twist when it was on the model. It is easy to overdue and I think less it more in this case. I had to redo the armor piece on his back b/c I overdid it. No biggie, just a new coat of hairspray, and black.
5. Matte varnish the whole thing and continue painting.
