With some gift cards that I as so generously given for Christmas (from my favorite group of 9/10 year olds) I bought some of the expansion sets for the Star Wars X-Wing game that my sons and I love. This game allows you to recreate space battles using many of the iconic ships in the Star Wars universe, with famous pilots like Luke, Han and Darth flying them.
The game requires thought and planning before moving your ships so as to get good angles on your opponents ships. Ultimately the goal of the game is to shoot their ships down, before they do yours.
Here is a shot of the game around turn 2. The Rebels had 2 X-Wings, an A-Wing and Han Solo behind the wheel of the Falcon.
So never being one to just leave things as is, I decided that the Falcon and Slave 1 needed a bit of upgrading. Here they are out of the package.
Not bad, just not as dirtied up as I would like. I also was not a fan of the grey on Slave 1’s sides. I prefer the green that is seen most often on that ship, and the red was not dark enough for me. On the Falcon, it is always shown as being dirty and grimy with oil streaks all over the hull. This was the look I was going for.
Here are the final results:
Slave 1 did not come out quite like I envisioned. The chipped paint on the red looks great, but the oil wash did not settle into all the panel lines like I wanted it to and like it did on the Falcon. Undercoating it and then hand painting it may have filled in those lines a bit and made it so that wash would not really “stick”in them. Overall I give it a B-.
The Falcon came out just as I had hoped. I repainted a few of the panels with red and a blueish grey and then gloss coated the whole model. Then I used a heavy oil wash that was wiped off in the direction the ship would fly once it was dry. I then added a bit of brown wash to the spots where oil and gunk would come out of the exposed engine spots on the hull. Overall I give this effort an A.
I LOVE star wars and the way you painted the ships, it looks like the real thing!
