As a teacher, the summer usually allows me to do much more painting than I normally would be able to during the school year. The heat in North Carolina is so ridiculous on some days, that staying inside in the A/C is really a great option.
I usually choose a large project to do for the summer such as two summers ago when I tackled the Riptide for my Tau force. He is shown below with his compatriots.
Last summer I attempted my larges kit ever, the Imperial Knight. What a great model this is, both from a building and painting standpoint. To date it is one of my favorite completed projects.
This summer was a bit of a change of direction. Rather than buy a single large model, I opted to get into Games Workshop’s latest boxed game, Silver Tower. The variety and challenges that this box includes was more than enough to challenge and push me as a painter. While I did not make quite as much headway into the box as I would have liked, I did get a decent church of the box finished.
First up were the Horrors included in the set. I started with the largest of them, the Pink Horrors, and then worked my way down from there.
These were a major change of pace from anything I had ever painted before. Pink is a really opaque color and requires multiple coats. Pair that with all the deep recesses on the model and the fact that there were two of them, led to many hours spent on these guys.
Next up were the blues. Having worked with blues quite a bit, I was able to knock these out pretty quickly. I am really happy with the blends on the tails.
Next, the smallest of the bunch, the Brimstone Horrors. These were both fun and quick.
Here is a group shot of the whole bunch. Ready to wreak havoc on our unsuspecting heroes.
Speaking of heroes, I was ready to get into painting up one of the fantastic miniatures that came with the set. I knew that the dwarf had to be first, as these models are absolutely amazing. The sculptors killed the beards and I really wanted to have a go at painting one.
So here his is in all his glory. The skin was a real challenge because of the runes tattooed all over, but for the most part he was really fun to paint. The face and especially the eyes, are among the best that I have ever done.
Next up was the Stormcast hero. Having painted several of these before…
…this model was not that big of a departure. He came out pretty well, although there are spots on his armor that are not quite as clean as the unit above.
That is it for the completed miniatures. The last shot is of one of the more powerful bad-guys in the box, Ogroid Thurmaturge. Despite his odd name, he is a great model and has the rule set to match.
More on him in coming weeks as I wrap him up.
