The summer is usually a time when I get a lot of painting done. Having just moved this spring, there were still several house projects that needed done before I could have some hobby time, so I did not get quite as much done this summer as I have in years past. That coupled with the fact that I decided to paint my most ambitious model yet (pictures to follow) means that other projects get put to the side so I can work on that.
Lets start with a small dwarf war band for a game called Shadespire. This is a card game, combined with miniatures. The board is much smaller than a usual board, and the games far shorter. The war bands are 3-7 miniatures, so the projects tend to go pretty quickly. Considering some armies have over 75 models, 3-7 models is nothing.
Here they are:
These guys are known as Fyreslayers. They live in active volcanoes and are fierce fighters. Their orange beards were really fun to paint, as were the turquoise bits on the weapons and helmets. Here are two closeups:
I am also a huge fan of the bushy eyebrows. They were supposed to be part of the helmet, but I thought they would look good painted up like this.
The other project from this summer is the one mentioned above. A monster of a model that I have been working on for 35 hours so far and I am less than half way done. It is quite a project but fortunately I am not burned out yet. Here are some early pictures. These are known as work in progress shots, so don’t judge about how it looks now.
Here is a full shot of him (or her) minus the wings. They are not shown in any of the pictures yet.
The ruined stairway he is standing on took forever. Still not in love with how it looks.
Really early work on his mouth. He breathes fire (like any proper dragon) so I tried for a glowing effect at the back of his throat that I am not sure will stay in the final version.
After most of the basecoats were down, the detail work begins. This guy has a bajillion scales on him and I decided it would be a great idea to paint each one individually. Not my brightest move.
Here is the finished tail. I love the way it looks and am super motivated to continue it up his back and onto his head.
The final project of the summer was some new buildings. The models need terrain to fight over and so my son and I got some new building to paint up. They took far longer than I was thinking they would but the finished city is pretty darn cool.
Thats is for now. More pictures to come on the dragon, as I start on his rider and eventually the wings.
